Greenways Improvement Project - Olentangy Trail and Scioto Trail

Updating the Olentangy Trail and the Scioto Trail

Background

This project aims to enhance the condition and extend the lifespan of multiple segments of the Olentangy Trail and Scioto Trail. Portions of the trail included in this project are over 20 years old and are approaching the end of their useful life. These improvements are critical to ensure that central Ohio’s busiest trail system remains not only functional but also safe and enjoyable for all users.

The project is divided into five sections:

1) Olentangy Trail – Antrim Park

2) Olentangy Trail – Olentangy Wetlands

3) Olentangy Trail – Tuttle Park

4) Olentangy Trail – 3rd Avenue to Goodale Street 3

5) Scioto Trail – Confluence Park

Planned improvements include pavement repair, replacement of pavement markings and limited vegetation removal to improve visibility and safety. These targeted repairs will extend the pavement’s service life and enhance user comfort along two of Columbus’ most heavily used recreational corridors.

Columbus Recreation and Parks Department applied through a special solicitation from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and was awarded $435,931.86 in federal funds in October 2025. Project funding will consist of 80 percent TAP funds and a 20 percent local match.

Trail Closures During Construction

  • Each section will be fully closed during construction to ensure public safety and an efficient construction schedule.
  • Only one section will be closed at a time to minimize impact to trail users.
  • The duration of each section closure is anticipated to take five to 10 business days, depending on section length and weather conditions.
  • The project will include advanced messaging signage to alert trail users of upcoming trail closures and durations for each section in addition to text and media alerts.
  • Signed detour routes for trail users will not be provided given the short duration of trail closure and limited accessible detour routes for bicyclists and pedestrians.
