Augmentative and Alternative Communication
CRPD’s Communication Station is a form of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). AAC is used to enhance or replace verbal speech. This AAC board is intended to promote inclusive communication and play in our parks!
There are a wide range of AAC tools, ranging from non-technological options such as facial expressions or hand gestures, to low technology options such as communication boards, and high technology options such as communication apps. Every person relies on AAC to varying degrees. Some people will use it daily throughout their lives, and others will only use it for a limited amount of time.
High tech AAC devices such as speech generating devices or tablets can be especially helpful for people that rely on AAC as their primary form of communication. These devices can be highly tailored to frequent names, words, or phrases that each individual uses. However, it is not always realistic to bring these devices to a playground or park. CRPD has created a playground communication board and a printable summer communication board to provide necessary communication resources and education!
