About

John Burroughs Park is a 1.78 acre neighborhood park in the Greater Hilltop community.

History: In 2022, the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department reopened John Burroughs Park after a major capital renovation to give the space a new playground, shelter, and other park amenities. The Department manages the land through a long term lease from Columbus City Schools. The adjacent Burroughs Elementary School was constructed in 1921, and was named after the beloved author and naturalist John Burroughs who died the same year. Through his writing, Burroughs recorded his experiences in nature by combining scientific observation with poetic appreciation that has laid the foundation for the environmental movement. Burroughs’ work and legacy continues to inspire current and future generations to appreciate nature and the animals that call it home through many parks, nature preserves, and historical sites existing in his honor.

Parking/Directions: There is pedestrian access to John Burroughs Park from S Burgess Ave and S Richardson Ave. Nearby on-street parking is available. For public transportation options, please visit https://ride.cota.com/#/.
