Tips for Staying Healthy and Safe in Extremely Cold Weather from Columbus Public Health

Stay Indoors

If you must go outdoors, make trips brief, dress in several layers of loose clothing and wear a hat and gloves.

Protect Your Skin

Stay dry and out of the wind. Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.

Check on Others

Check on family members, friends and neighbors. Bring pets indoors.

Watch for Signs of Frostbite and Hypothermia

Watch for signs such as slurred speech, confusion, uncontrollable shivering, stumbling, drowsiness and body temperature of less that 95°. Get immediate medical attention if you think you or someone you know has frostbite and hypothermia.

Be Prepared

Keep emergency supplies in your car during extreme cold, such as warm blankets, gloves, a flashlight, jumper cables and an ice scraper. These items can help keep you safe and prepared if you experience car trouble in winter conditions.
