Big Walnut Trail: Cherrybottom Park to Morse Road

Columbus Recreation and Parks Department is moving forward with a vital new link in our regional trail network. We are currently in the planning and design phase for a 1.5-mile extension of the Big Walnut Trail, bridging the gap between Cherrybottom Park and the Morse Road corridor. This project is more than just a path: it is a commitment to creating an equitable, safe and beautiful space for all residents to enjoy.

This extension will provide over 31,000 local residents with direct access to a 140-mile regional trail network, encouraging active lifestyles and strengthening our community’s connection to nature. Key project highlights include:

• Enhanced Safety: We are prioritizing separated, accessible facilities and clear sightlines, specifically focusing on creating safer crossings at high-traffic areas like Morse Road.
• Environmental Stewardship: Our design team is working to minimize environmental impact by protecting mature trees (including local 84” sycamores) and exploring sustainable materials like crushed gravel/limestone screenings and repurposed timber.
• A Unique Cultural Corridor: The trail may feature public art, historical markers and unique seating areas that celebrate the local history and voices of our neighborhoods.
• Improved Connectivity: Long-term, this project will create “last mile” links to local businesses, COTA bus stops and neighborhood schools, making it easier to run errands or commute without a car.

The Big Walnut Trail project will create a new shared-use path connecting Cherrybottom Park to Morse Road and the existing Big Walnut/Alum Creek trail system. The development will also include new bridges to cross the creek and areas within the park, along with improved connections to nearby neighborhoods. Throughout the planning and design process, community input and environmental considerations will help shape the final trail so that it reflects local priorities and provides long-term benefits for residents and visitors.

The map below presents the area where the Big Walnut Trail extension between Cherrybottom Park and the existing Gahanna trail connection on Morse Road just east of Big Walnut Creek will be developed. Appian Way, Morse Road and the specific path of the trail connection are key priorities for input.

As we assess the area and the options available to avoid impacting existing infrastructure like utilities and minimize environmental impact, we are seeking feedback on:

• Safe crossing across Morse Road
• Bridge and path locations in Cherrybottom Park and across Big Walnut Creek
• Ways to integrate the trail into nearby homes and businesses
• Environmentally friendly preferences for path and amenity materials 
• Input on current or potential disturbances in the area and how best to mitigate them
